ICDS scheme was launched on October 2,1975 for the all round development of children up to the age of 0-6 years. In the year 1978-79, child development projects were started in three development blocks of Uttarakhand Chakrata, Kirtinagar and Dharchula.
At present, 97 rural projects, 8 urban projects, total 105 child development projects are being operated in 95 development blocks under all the 13 districts of the state, out of which 14947 Anganwadi centers and 5120 mini Anganwadi centers are approved.
The aim of the department is to improve nutrition and health, to reduce their malnutrition, mortality and dropout rate, and to improve the health level of mothers.

Objectives of ICDS: – To improve the nutritional and health status of children below the age of 06 years. To lay the foundation for proper psychological, physical and social development of children.
Reducing the tendency to drop out of school. To create effective coordination in policy formulation and program implementation in various departments to promote child development. Wasthe and nutrition increase mothers the ability to through education to take care of children’s general health and nutrition needs.
Departmental Services: – 06 special services are provided to the beneficiaries in a coordinated manner through “Anganwadi Centers” under ICDS – (1) Nutrition and Health Education (2) Health Testing (3) Referel Services (4) Immunization / Vaccination (5) Supplementary Nutrition (6) Early Childhood Care and Education
